About the Event
The Mambira Foundation, in partnership with Studio 541 Productions, presents “Black Freedom Concert” featuring Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited. This live streaming concert (view on Facebook: Studio 541 Productions) performed in Eugene, Oregon, at Studio 541 will feature Zimbabwean musicians based in Eugene, Oregon. Join other Zimbabweans, the Zimbabwean diaspora, and the thousands of fans who support Zimbabwean musicians to create a virtual audience that spans continents and builds the strength of our communities. Mapfumo’s performance will be preceded by the up-and-coming, RatieD band featuring Claire Ratie Dangarembwa Morgan and band mates Gilbert Zvamaida (Zig Zag Band) and John Mambira (Bongo Love) along with collaborations with Idit Shner, M5 Vibe, Michael Kay Klindt (SageCrow), and Christopher Muchabaiwa (De Solution Band). The collaborative performances will highlight the socio-political themes of black people’s freedom world-wide as well as the dire need for a global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Producing a free concert with the legendary Thomas Mapfumo is not just an inspiration for me, but will inspire the Zimbabwean people to survive through our time of food and water scarcity while also joining the world fight against the Coronavirus. This concert will expose the similarities of the fight for freedom that black people around the world face daily, whether in Zimbabwe or Eugene, Oregon. Tirivanhu vamwe chete (we are one people).” John Mambira, artistic director and founder of the Mambira Foundation
